LOOKING FOR SILVER LININGS
It's the World Series I didn't want
A silver lining to the completion of baseball’s League Championship Series:
At least Don Mattingly, the greatest Yankee never to make a World Series, is finally going to one, as bench coach of the Toronto Blue Jays.
That fact has been hitting my social media quite often today, and I suppose I could take that as at least one positive to come out of the upcoming World Series, which will NOT feature Milwaukee vs Seattle in a contest that would have seen one of those franchises win the Fall Classic for the first time. And of course, for the Mariners it would have been their first Series ever,
Instead, we have the team that knocked the Yankees out of the postseason last year against the team that knocked the Yankees out of the postseason this year.
And don’t get me started on the Yankees. They’ve completed their transformation into baseball’s answer to Phantom of the Opera: something that brings the tourists in and makes a lot of money, but you really wouldn’t mind if they went away and they brought something else along in their place. You know, a team that can actually win a World Series.
Good luck, Donnie Baseball. I suppose I can swallow seeing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. holding up the World Series trophy if it means you can hold it up as well.
