The Buffalo Bills defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 47-10 on Monday Night Football. It was 34-3 at halftime. Josh Allen threw four touchdowns to four different receivers. Rookie Keon Coleman recorded his first receiving touchdown. Damar Hamlin got his first career interception. For the Bills, a splendid night overall.
But during the second quarter, a revelation. A cut to Bills OC Joe Brady in the coaching box revealed …

For those of you unfamiliar, Moxie is a soft drink that is primarily found in New England, especially in Maine. During a visit there, a tour guider related to me that the state is known for four things: lobster, blueberries, whoopie pies and Moxie. So, or course, I tried all four, and I can tell you that Moxie, which has been around longer than Coca Cola, is … an acquired taste.
But the presence of Moxie in Joe Brady’s booth brought up several questions. The first question is how Brady was allowed to even have it on camera: Pepsi is the official soft drink of the NFL, and Moxie is technically a Coca-Cola product. Secondly, Moxie is mostly sold in the New England area, and is very hard to get outside of it. Thirty, nothing in Brady’s background would indicate how he may have acquired a taste for Moxie: born in Pembroke Pines, FL, graduate of William and Mary, where he also started his coaching career, followed by stops at Penn State, the Saints, LSU, the Panthers and finally the Bills.
So where did Brady find his Moxie? Well, one thought is, since the Bills travel to Foxboro, MA once a year, he might have discovered it on one of those road trips. Another theory would be that Brady could have stoops at a Cracker Barrel restaurant. Their country store often carries old-time sodas such as Bubble Up and Cheerwine, and I have sometimes seen Moxie there. There is one Cracker Barrel just outside of Buffalo, probably less than an hour from Orchard Park. So that could be a possible sports.
To my knowledge, Brady was not asked about his can of Moxie after the game. But if the Bills offense continues to perform at their current high level (they have the longest current regular season winning streak at 8 games), it may be hard to ignore. Moxie may start popping up at stores all over Western New York.
If the Bills can get to the promised land, you can make mine Moxie, no matter how odd it may taste. Cheers!
